I sell on Instagram and WhatsApp in Algeria: do I need an app? Most of the time, no. Here is what to do instead (2026).

You sell cosmetics, clothes, home decor or food on Instagram. Orders arrive in DMs and on WhatsApp, and you spend your evenings replying. The honest answer to the app question, the three tiers, what an ordering site really brings, and the three cases where an app is justified.

Short answer. No, in the vast majority of cases you do not need a mobile app. An app costs millions of dinars, needs maintenance every year, and above all requires your customers to install it: they will not do that for an Instagram shop, however beautiful. What you need depends on your volume. Under thirty orders a week, free rules on WhatsApp Business are enough. Between thirty and a few hundred, a light ordering site, with a link in your bio, delivery fees by wilaya, Yalidine integrated and cash on delivery, replaces your evenings of messages. The app comes last, in three precise cases we detail.

This guide answers a question a skincare seller asked us in Arabic: "I sell online, how can this serve me?". Here is the complete answer, written to be useful even if you never call us.

Why the app is not the right first question

What limits your sales today is not the absence of an app. It is the message left unanswered for three hours, the order written in a notebook and forgotten, the incomplete address that sends the parcel back, the customer who refuses cash on delivery because nobody called to confirm, and the stock you discover is out after selling it. An app solves none of these problems. An ordering process does.

The figure below compares the three options on what really matters.

Figure 1 · The ordering site gives almost everything the app gives, without asking the customer to install anything.

Read the row "effort asked of the customer". On Instagram, your customer is one message away from you. With an ordering site, one tap away. With an app, they must install it, open it, create an account. Each extra step loses part of the customers, and an Instagram shop does not have the brand that justifies that effort. Even the large commerce apps in Algeria struggle: Jumia left the country in March 2026.

«Your customers will not install an app for an Instagram shop. They will tap a link.»

Tier 1 — Sell better on Instagram and WhatsApp, this week

Five free rules that fix half the losses before any software.

  1. 01Move to WhatsApp Business with a catalogue: each product, its price, its photo. The customer chooses without you typing prices ten times a day.
  2. 02Save your replies: delivery price by wilaya, lead times, returns, payment methods. One tap, not a sentence to rewrite.
  3. 03An order form by link, free: name, phone, wilaya, commune, item, quantity. No more incomplete orders in DMs.
  4. 04A confirmation rule: no shipment without a confirmation call or message. That is what halves refusals at delivery.
  5. 05One orders sheet, with a status per row: to confirm, confirmed, shipped, delivered, returned. Fifteen minutes a day to keep it.

If you do fewer than thirty orders a week, this tier is enough and you have nothing to buy. Keep it for three months: the numbers in your sheet will tell you whether the next tier is justified.

02

Tier 2 — The light ordering site: when, and what

The signs it is time: more than thirty to fifty orders a week, hours spent every evening on messages, address and wilaya errors that cost you returns, customers asking "how much is delivery to Oran?" ten times a day, and a stock you no longer know exactly.

A light ordering site is not a big e-commerce site. It is a product page built for the phone, an order in three screens without creating an account, and an admin you open on your phone.

Figure 2 · Instagram stays the shop window. The site becomes the till and the memory of orders.

Instagram stays your shop window, the link in the bio replaces "send me a message", and the site becomes the till and the memory of orders. Cash on delivery stays the default; CIB and Edahabia are added when volume justifies it, we documented online payment integration in Algeria. For the order of magnitude of the budget, see our website price grid for Algeria: an ordering site sits in the e-commerce category, not the app category.

Where AI helps an Instagram shop, and where it is a gimmick

AI is useful to an Instagram shop on exactly two points, and those two points are the biggest leaks of your day.

Figure 3 · The two uses that pay address the real leak: the unanswered message and the order never confirmed.

Answering price and availability messages at any hour, in Arabic and French, from your up-to-date catalogue, and handing over to you as soon as the question leaves the catalogue. Following up unconfirmed orders on WhatsApp after two hours, then the next day. These two uses plug into an ordering site, not a notebook: AI needs products and orders to exist somewhere structured. The rest, stock forecasting, generated images, waits until you have six months of real data.

«An app is a reward for a shop that already runs, not a cure for a shop that is starting.»
04

Tier 3 — The app: the three cases where it is justified

A mobile app becomes profitable for a shop in three situations, and only those.

  1. 01Frequent repurchase. Consumables, skincare routines, food: the customer orders every two to four weeks. The app reduces the second order to two gestures and allows subscriptions.
  2. 02Loyalty and notifications. You have hundreds of recurring customers and want to tell them about a new arrival, a promotion, a loyalty point. An app's push notifications do what neither Instagram nor WhatsApp allows at that scale.
  3. 03An established brand, or several points of sale. Customers look for you by name, you have one or several physical shops, and the app links stock, orders and loyalty between physical and mobile.
Figure 4 · Six weeks. The link replaces "send me a message" in the bio.

Outside these three cases, the app is an expense that does not change your sales. Inside them, it falls into category 2 or 3 of our app price grid, and it is built on top of the ordering site you already have, not instead of it.

The mistakes we see among online sellers

  • Ordering an app before having a process. The app inherits the mess and nobody installs it.
  • A big e-commerce site with mandatory accounts. Algerian customers do not create an account for a first order. Order without account, phone number as identity.
  • Ignoring fees by wilaya. A single delivery price loses you money in the South and customers in Algiers.
  • Shipping without confirming. Returns at delivery destroy margin more surely than any commission.
  • Relying on a marketplace for the customer relationship. It gives you visibility and keeps the data. Jumia left Algeria in March 2026; sellers who only had Jumia started over.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a light ordering site cost?
It sits in the e-commerce category of our website price grid, well below an app. The exact amount depends on the number of products, the carriers to integrate and whether online payment is included.
Is online payment needed from the start?
No. Cash on delivery remains the majority. Launch with WhatsApp confirmation and a call, add CIB and Edahabia when a share of your customers asks for it.
Should I abandon Instagram?
No. Instagram remains your shop window and your acquisition. The ordering site takes over at the moment the customer wants to buy.
What about Ouedkniss or a marketplace?
Useful for visibility, but the customer relationship and the data stay with the marketplace. Keep your own ordering link in parallel.
When does the app become profitable?
In three cases: frequent repurchase, a loyalty programme with notifications, an established brand or several points of sale. Outside those, the ordering site is enough.
