Do I need my own branded app in 2027, or should I sell through the super-apps and marketplaces? (Algeria)

You have a brand: a restaurant or a chain, a pharmacy, a cosmetics or clothing brand, a gym, a wholesaler. Your customers find you on Instagram and write to you on WhatsApp; a super-app or a marketplace offers to sell for you against a commission; and someone told you that you needed “your own app”. In what order, for which type of brand, what you give up to a platform and what you keep with your own, and the 2027 calendar where the app is decided on numbers.

Short answer. Platforms sell what the customer buys once; your branded app keeps the one who comes back. In 2027 an Algerian brand climbs the ladder in order: a WhatsApp Business kept properly; a presence on super-apps and marketplaces to acquire customers, accepting the commission and the loss of data; branded online ordering, a site or web app with CIB/Edahabia payment, to own its customers and data without anyone installing anything; then the branded app, when three months of numbers show customers coming back every week. Jumping to the app without online ordering yields an app nobody installs; staying on platforms yields a brand that does not know its customers.

This guide answers a question we get almost every week, often phrased “do I need an app”, and it extends I sell on Instagram, do I need an app, written for the solo seller. Here, the brand already has customers and demand; the question is where to serve them and where to keep them.

The ladder: four rungs, in order

Each rung is earned with the previous one. Rung 3, branded online ordering, is the one almost everyone skips, and it is the most expensive mistake.

Figure 1 · Jumping to rung 4 without rung 3 yields an app nobody installs. Staying on rung 2 yields a brand that does not know its customers.

WhatsApp Business, rung 1, with a company number, a catalogue, template replies and hours; it is enough under twenty orders a day, and it stays afterwards as the conversation channel. Super-apps and marketplaces, rung 2: customers right away, because the traffic is there, against a commission on every sale and customers who remain the platform's. It is an acquisition channel, not a loyalty one. Branded online ordering, rung 3: a site or a web app, nothing to install, with CIB/Edahabia payment through your online-merchant status, tracking, and above all your own customers and data. That is where you learn who comes back. Your branded app, rung 4: two-tap ordering, notifications, loyalty; it is justified when customers come back every week, because nobody installs the app of a brand they buy from twice a year.

The verdict by brand type

The right rung depends on purchase frequency and on who owns the relationship. Here is our reading for 2027.

Figure 2 · Platforms sell what the customer buys once. Your branded app keeps the one who comes back.

Restaurants live on delivery platforms, because the customer chooses a meal before choosing a restaurant; their own app is justified for a chain with customers ordering every week, and branded online ordering cuts the commission on regulars. Pharmacies and store chains have returning customers and prescriptions to renew: their app is the main channel, and no platform represents them properly. Product brands do both: marketplaces to be found, branded ordering to keep the margin and loyal customers; the app comes when repurchase is monthly. The Instagram seller stays on platforms and WhatsApp until volume justifies online ordering. Appointment services, clinics, gyms, salons, have every interest in their own booking: the appointment is the relationship. Banks, insurers, telecoms, energy have no choice; we wrote about the Doctolib equivalent for clinics. Wholesalers and B2B have professional customers ordering every week: a branded ordering app, with negotiated prices and payment schedule, replaces the phone and the notebook.

What you give up to a platform, and what your app keeps

A platform is neither good nor bad. It is a trade, to be looked at line by line.

Figure 3 · The platform sells traffic in exchange for the customer, the margin and the data. A good trade to acquire, a bad one to keep.

The customer: on a platform they are the platform's; you are a line in a list, interchangeable with the line below. In your app they are yours, with their number, history and preferences. The margin: the platform takes a commission on every sale and imposes its promotions; your app keeps the whole margin, minus payment and hosting. The data: the platform gives you aggregated numbers, you do not know who comes back; your app records every order, which is what makes reminders, loyalty and AI on your data possible. Acquisition: the platform includes the traffic, that is exactly what you pay for; your app has to build it, through your shops, your Instagram, your WhatsApp, and through the platforms themselves, which remain the best place to acquire a customer before moving them to you. Risk: a platform can close or change its rules overnight, and it has happened in Algeria, with international marketplaces leaving the market; your app has its own risk, maintenance and store updates, budgeted before launch as we explain in the seven decisions of a mobile app in 2027.

The strategy that holds in 2027 uses both: platforms to acquire, your branded app or online ordering to keep. A brand that sends its regulars to order on a platform pays a commission on customers it already had.

The calendar: the app is decided in month eight

Twelve months, and a decision made on numbers rather than in January on a hunch.

Figure 4 · The app is decided in month eight, on the numbers from online ordering, not in January on a hunch.

January-February: WhatsApp Business kept, company number, catalogue, rules; presence on the platforms where your customers already search. The online-merchant file starts in January, through your bank and GIE Monétique; it takes weeks to months. March to May: branded online ordering, site or web app, CIB/Edahabia and QR payment, tracking, in Arabic and French. Nothing to install: the customer arrives from Instagram, WhatsApp or a QR code in the shop. June to August: measurement. How many customers come back, how often, what basket. Three months of data. September to November: your branded app, if the numbers say so, with loyalty and notifications; otherwise online ordering is enough, and that is good news. November-December: abandoned-basket reminders, repurchase, support, on your data. An online ordering project sits in category 1 or 2 of our price grid, the app in category 2; the total price is written before starting.

The mistakes we see among brands

  • Ordering “an app” in January. It ships in June, nobody installs it. Online ordering first, the app on numbers.
  • Sending regulars to a platform. Commission paid on customers you already had. Platforms to acquire, your channel to keep.
  • Selling only on one platform. It changes its rules or closes, the brand starts from zero. Rung 3 is insurance.
  • An app with no reason to come back. No loyalty, no two-tap ordering, no useful notification: uninstalled within a week.
  • Ignoring WhatsApp once the app is launched. Customers keep writing there. It stays the conversation channel, connected to your ordering.
  • Forgetting the maintenance budget. Without updates, the app leaves the stores within a year. Decided before launch.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own branded app in 2027?
Only if customers come back every week or every month. Before that, branded online ordering, with nothing to install, is enough to own your customers and data. The app is decided on three months of online ordering numbers, not on a hunch.
Is selling on a super-app or a marketplace a good idea?
Yes to acquire customers: traffic is included, against a commission and customers who remain the platform’s. No to keep them: a brand that sends its regulars to order on a platform pays a commission on customers it already had.
What is the difference between online ordering and an app?
Online ordering is a site or a web app, nothing to install, that the customer opens from Instagram, WhatsApp or a QR code; it gives you your customers and data. The app is installed, adds two-tap ordering, notifications and loyalty, and is justified when customers come back often.
Which types of brands need their own app?
Those whose customers come back and whose relationship is the product: pharmacies and store chains, appointment services, banks and insurers, wholesalers and B2B. Restaurants live mostly on platforms, except chains with regulars; product brands combine both.
What happens if the platform closes?
You lose the channel and the customers who were there, because they were never yours. It has happened in Algeria with international marketplaces. Branded online ordering is the insurance: your customers and your data belong to you.
How long to climb the ladder?
Twelve months: WhatsApp Business and platforms in January-February, merchant file started in January, online ordering from March to May, measurement from June to August, app from September to November if the numbers justify it, reminders and AI at year end.
